Dark places - the island of Poveglia

Are there such things as ghosts? Do you believe there are frightful, haunted places? Places with bad history where strange and terrible things have happened.

PovegliaIn Italy there is a small isolated island in the Venetian Lagoon called Poveglia. This island has a very dark and sad history. At first the island was used as a dumping ground for thousands of plague victims during the three times in history when the black plague spread throughout Europe. Terrified of the black death the officials of Venice tried to isolate anyone that showed symptoms by sending them to this island. Here they would all meet a faith not even imaginable. It is said that more than 160 000 human beings died there during these sad times. To this day fishermen are said to avoid the waters near the island because of the chance of catching human remains in their nets.

PovegliaAs if this wasn’t enough, in 1922 a psychiatric hospital was built on the island and patients located to this hospital soon reported seeing ghosts and hearing terrible sounds and screams. As if it was from a bad horror movie, the doctor in charge started to carry out strange medical experiments on the patients trying to find the origin of these strange experiences. In the end the doctor himself went mad and died throwing himself off the hospital bell tower.

The hospital has since then been abandoned and the island remains under watchment from the coastal guards to deter any visitors from making a bizarre tourism attraction of it’s dark past.
